Athens has been a significant player in the live music scene for over 50 years. The 1980s were particularly noteworthy, with bands like REM (church steeple from their first ever show pictured below), Widespread Panic, and the B-52s making their mark.
This town isn’t just about history; it’s a living, breathing hub of musical talent and passion.

Visit40 Watt ClubandGeorgia Theatre, two venues that have stood the test of time. These places continue to attract locals and visitors, offering a mix of established headliners and aspiring artists.

With over 10,000 items ranging from American paintings to European and Asian works, there’s something to captivate every art lover. Touring exhibits add a dynamic element, ensuring there’s always something new to see.
I was a big fan of the dark-painted walls in the Georgia Museum of Art, making the paintings even more dramatic and impressive. Then, a dainty pale pink wall comes out of the left field with “ballet-esque” paintings that won me over.
Don’t miss “Out of the Darkness,” a luminescent wall art piece by Artist Rebecca Rutstein. It’s both mesmerizing and thought-provoking. You’ll also find works by Paul Revere, including silver teaspoons circa 1770—truly a step back in time.
Public Art and Community Spirit
Athens boasts an impressive amount of public art, from creatively painted bulldog statues to vibrant murals and mosaic lamp post bases.
Spot over 40 uniquely painted bulldog statues scattered throughout Athens. Each one tells a story and adds to the town’s quirky charm.
Stroll through the streets to discover colorful murals and art installations that reflect the community’s spirit and creativity. Fire hydrants painted with whimsical designs exemplify Athens’ commitment to art in public spaces.
Savoring the Local Brews
Athens is home to several breweries that are well worth a visit. Whether you’re a beer connoisseur or just looking to relax with a cold one, you’ll find something to enjoy.
Terrapin Beer Co.
Established in 2002, Terrapin Beer Co. is one of Georgia’s most recognized beer brands. Their bestsellers, Hopsecutioner (aged in wood from Atlanta Braves baseball bats) and Walking Dead Blood Orange IPA, are a testament to their brewing prowess.
Creature Comforts Brewing Co.
Creature Comforts Brewing Co. offers a beautiful and cozy taproom where you can sample a flight of beers. Tropicália is the best-selling beer, but I was smitten with Awaken, My Love, a limited release.
The taproom’s ambiance, complete with fresh flowers and charming marquee lights, makes it a delightful place to unwind.

The University of Georgia
The University of Georgia (colloquially known as UGA) is more than just an academic institution; it’s a cultural and historical landmark that adds to Athens’ vibrant atmosphere. And it’s the driving force behind Athens’s coolness factor–or at least I found it to be.
Historic North Campus
UGA is one of the nation’s oldest public universities, dating back to 1785. North Campus, the oldest part of UGA, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It features the Reserve Chapel, Abraham Baldwin statue, Old College, and the iconic Arch.
These landmarks are set against a backdrop of dogwoods, flower gardens, and a picturesque fountain.
Fun and Tradition
Herty Field, UGA’s first football field, is a focal point of North Campus. It’s a great place to soak in the history and tradition that makes UGA so special.
Culinary Delights with Chef Hugh Acheson
Chef Hugh Acheson, a two-time James Beard Award winner and “Top Chef” alum, brings his culinary masterpieces to Athens through his flagship restaurant, 5&10.
Seasonal Menus
Located in the Five Points neighborhood, 5&10 offers a menu that changes with the seasons. Dishes like Classic Caesar salad with fried bread crumbs and Crab Rice with green apple and miso butter showcase the chef’s creativity.
Unique Drinks
Take advantage of the house-made seasonal soda pop. During my visit, the plum soda was a delightful and refreshing surprise.

Last Resort Grill
Originally a music venue, Last Resort Grill serves stellar food in a setting rich with cool art. The daily ravioli dish and Pozole, topped with a perfectly fried egg, are crowd favorites.

Founded by Hugh Acheson and Peter Dale, The National offers unique Mediterranean dishes made from locally sourced ingredients. Start with Patatas Bravas or Hummus with Lamb, and pair your meal with a glass of wine or a house-made co*cktail.
Condor Chocolates
Condor Chocolates, created by brothers Peter and Nick Dale, brings premium artisan chocolate to Athens. Their offerings include chocolate bars, truffles, gelato, and coffee drinks.
Be sure to try their Cacao Coffee and look out for their upcoming chocolate factory tour.
Avid Bookshop – The Heart of the Community
Avid Bookshop in Five Points is a unique bookstore that hand-selects books based on customer preferences. Their children’s section is particularly charming, featuring titles you won’t find elsewhere.
Plan to spend some time here; it’s worth it.
