I will warn you, homemade fortune cookies are surprisingly easy to make, but they are a bit time consuming if you’re making a large batch because you can only make 4 or 5 at a time, unless you have a good helper or two. But they are delicious and it is SO much fun coming up with funny or scary “misfortunes!”

For your “misfortunes”, you can go really dark and deadly (my favorite is “You will soon choke. On a cookie.”) or lighthearted and playful with popular Halloween puns (“Trick or Treat Yo’self!”) and you can play with traditional Halloween colors of black and orange or mix it up with purple, pink, and green!

I will say that the black and orange cookie colors were PERFECT! The purple gets a little dark on the edges (blue does the same thing). Do you love the new “Pinkoween” trend? Make some pink cookies with orange sprinkles! When I did my NYE Resolution Cookies a few years ago, my pink cookies came out perfectly pink, so make some pink cookies for Halloween!

My fortune cookie recipe is NOT made with almond extract – I’m not a big fan of that flavor – but instead these are more of a cinnamon sugar cookie! Plus, they are surprisingly delicious when topped with Candy Melts and fancy sprinkles. I say surprisingly because I normally do not like the taste of candy melts, but they work really well with these cookies!

Halloween Misfortune Cookies Recipe (5)I think the black cookies turned out really well! I was afraid they were going to be grey instead of black, so I was very happy with the results. And yes, the coloring is the result of food coloring dyes, so if you don’t like using artificial food coloring, then I suggest you look for some natural colors or dyes – maybe squid ink?Halloween Misfortune Cookies Recipe (6)

I will admit that I did mess up the first dozen cookies that I made because I didn’t fully follow my directions. I kept forgetting to flip the cookies once I took them out of the oven and the underneaths (the inside of the cookie) gets kind of ugly as it cooks.

As I was making them, I couldn’t figure out why the first few weren’t as pretty as my New Years Eve Resolution cookies, so I went back and re-read the directions and figured out that I was skipping that important step!

I think I was rushing because I know how quickly you have to work with the cookies once you take them out of the oven: you need to remove them, flip a cookie, add a fortune, fold it in half, and then crimp it before it gets too cool and hardens.

And can we talk about the sprinkles? I used my own blend of Fancy Sprinkles which have the best color and crunch, along with some eyeballs and some gold stars and I love the combination!

Here’s a quick list of some of my misfortunes:

  • You will soon choke. On a cookie.
  • I hope you locked your doors!
  • Wouldn’t it be ironic … to die in the living room?
  • Run!
  • Your luck just ran out!
  • It was probably just the wind!
  • Boo!
  • Treat yourself before you trick yourself.
  • Come to the dark side. We have cookies!
  • Creep it real.
  • If you’ve got it, haunt it!
  • Trick or treat yo’self!
  • Hey boo-tiful! I think you’re gourd-ous!
  • Demons are a ghoul’s best friend!

Ingredients

  • 4 large egg whites
  • 1 cup fine granulated sugar
  • 1 cup flour, sifted
  • pinch salt
  • 2 tsp corn starch
  • ½ tsp cinnamon
  • 3 Tb heavy cream
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 5 Tb butter, melted and cooled
  • 1 cup white chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. Place your egg whites in a bowl and whisk them until frothy and set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, combine the sugar, flour, salt, corn starch, and cinnamon. Then form a well in the middle, add the heavy cream, vanilla extract, and butter and mix the wet ingredients with a spatula until all of the dry ingredients from the sides of the bowl have combined.
  4. Next, add half the egg whites and stir until smooth, then combine the other half of egg whites and stir until combined.
  5. If you wish to make different colored cookies, divide the batter into different bowls, add your desired food coloring and mix.
  6. Use a spoon to add 6 half-dollar dollops of batter to your non-stick baking mat (Silpat), setting them each about 3-4 inches apart. Then use the back of the spoon to spread out the batter into a circular shape, making it as thin as possible without creating any holes.
  7. Bake the cookies for 6-8 minutes until the edges slightly brown.
  8. Then use an off-set spatula to quickly flip the cookies, add your printed resolutions to the middle, and fold each cookie in half lengthwise. Then immediately pick up the cookie and fold it in half again - the easiest way to do this is by molding it over the edge of a coffee mug. Place the folded cookie in a cupcake baking tin to hold the shape as the cookie hardens. You must do this step quickly before the cookie cools and hardens.
  9. Decorate the cookies by dipping into melted candy melts and covering with sprinkles.
  10. Store in an airtight container or cookies will soften and get chewy.

My oven’s sweet spot timing for these cookies was 7:30. And don’t forget the flip the cookies before you add the misfortune!

Also, here is the food coloring that I use: orange, purple, and black. Here is the link to purchase an off-set spatula, a non-stick baking mat, and my fancy sprinkles!

I love how versatile fortune cookies can be for different holidays. You can make Misfortune Cookies for Halloween, Thankful Cookies for Thanksgiving, Season’s Greetings Cookies for Christmas, Resolution Cookies for New Year’s Eve, etc. I made fortune cookies a few years ago as Resolution Cookies for New Years Eve and they were a big hit!
